Back, Sciatica,
Neck & Shoulder Pain

Research suggests acupuncture can help relieve back, neck, shoulder and sciatic pain by stimulating nerves to release endorphins to change the way the brain processes pain. It can reduce inflammation, improve muscle stiffness, increase joint mobility and support post-operative pain management.

Back Pain

Over 1 million people in the UK suffer with back pain Most lower back pain most often caused by sprains, muscle strains, minor injuries, or a pinched or irritated nerve.

Research has shown that acupuncture is significantly better than no treatment and at least as good as (if not better than) standard medical care for back pain (Witt 2006; Haake 2007; Cherkin 2009; Sherman 2009a). It is particularly useful alongside conventional care, for patients with more severe symptoms and for those wishing to avoid analgesic drugs.

Sciatica

Sciatica involves pain caused by nerve root impingement and/or inflammation that has progressed enough to cause symptoms such as pain, numbness and tingling. The discomfort can be felt in the lower back, buttock, down the thigh, sometimes reaching as far as the foot. It is usually experienced on just one side.

Conventional management includes advice to stay active and continue daily activities; exercise therapy; analgesics (e.g. paracetamol, NSAIDs, an opioid); muscle relaxants; corticosteroid spinal injections; and referral for consideration of surgery. However, there is a lack of strong evidence of effectiveness for most of these interventions (Hagen 2007, Luijsterburg 2007).

Whilst there is limited research on the effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment for sciatica evidence suggests that it may provide some pain relief (Wang 2009, Chen 2009, Inoue 2008, Wang 2004).

Acupuncture is believed to relieve sciatic pain by stimulating nerves to release endorphins to change the way the brain processes pain. It can reduce inflammation, improve muscle stiffness and increase joint mobility. It has been suggested that it influences the signalling system which influences pain and increases factors which reduce pain and speed nerve repair.

Neck & Shoulder Pain

Neck pain is one of the three most frequently reported musculoskeletal problems. The majority of the adult population can recall experiencing an issue at some time in their life.

Neck pain can be associated with symptoms that radiate to the arms or head and may involve one or several neurovascular and musculoskeletal structures such as nerves, nerve roots, intervertebral joints, discs, bones, muscle and ligaments.

Frozen or painful shoulder are common, painful and sometimes disabling condition that can last for months or years. The characteristic symptoms are pain, stiffness and limitation of active and passive shoulder movements (particularly external rotation of the joint).

Acupuncture is believed to relieve neck and shoulder pain by stimulating nerves to release endorphins to change the way the brain processes pain. It can reduce inflammation, improve muscle stiffness and increase joint mobility.
